‘Ensuring proper management of university is urgent’

Educationalists say it is more important to ensure proper management of universities that are established than to approve private universities. They say, it is not like that you will just approve, you have to control properly.

When asked, Dhaka University (DU) Professor Syed Manzurul Islam said, “The University Grant Commission (UGC) was formed in accordance with the structure of 1972, but even today that structure has not been changed. More than one and a half hundred universities are still being run with the old infrastructure across the country. With this facility, some people are commercialising higher education with approval of universities.”

BSS Chairman, also former DU VC Professor Dr A A M S Arefin Siddique said, “Whenever a new university is approved, it is important to ensure its standard. Because the university is a place of research. Universities play an important role in the development of the country.”

It was learnt that the Directorate of Secondary & Higher Education has approved a new university through the Ministry of Education on Thursday (September 10), raising the total number of private universities to 107.

The newly approved university is known as ‘RTM Al-Kabir Technical University’ to be established at TB gate area at Tulkikar union under Sylhet sadar upazila. Ahmed Al Kabir is founder of the university. The Directorate of Secondary and Higher Education has sent him a letter with temporary permission to operate the university.
