PM to open DU centenary conference this evening

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina will inaugurate an international conference at Dhaka University (DU) today (January 21) on the occasion of university’s birth centenary.

The Prime Minister, also former student of the university, will inaugurate the virtual conference titled ‘Celebrating the 100 Years of the University of Dhaka: Reflections from the Alumni – International and National’ as the chief guest at university’s Nabab Nawab Ali Chowdhury Senate Bhaban at 6:00pm virtually.

She will join the inaugural ceremony through a video conference from her official residence Ganabhaban. DU Vice-chancellor (VC) Professor Dr Md Akhtaruzzaman will preside over the ceremony. From national and international level, former students of the university will participate in the conference virtually.

Education Minister Dr Dipu Moni will address the opening ceremony as the special guest while prominent economist Rehman Sobhan will present the keynote speech.

The information was made public at a press conference held at 11:00 am on Wednesday (January 20) at the university’s Abdul Matin virtual classroom adjacent to VC’s office, with DU VC in the chair.

A total of six thematic webinar series will be held throughout the year with one in every month following the first one – Science for Society in February, 2021, followed by Arts, Literature and Culture in March, 2021, Business in April, 2021, Social Sciences in May, 2021 and Futures of Higher Education in June, 2021.

“We have set three primary goals to achieve from the webinars. Those are: learning and achieving the techniques to implement Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) by 2030, making fourth industrial revolution friendly Dhaka University and providing skilled manpower to the country,” said Dr Akhtaruzzaman.
