The students of the Shahjalal University of Science and Technology (SUST) who were committed to continue their hunger strike until the resignation of their Vice-Chancellor (VC) Professor Farid Uddin Ahmed are going to call it off eventually.

The students are supposed to withdraw the movement at the request of Muhammed Zafar Iqbal, former professor of the university and renowned writer, at 8 am on Wednesday (January 26).

The students were informed that Professor Zafar Iqbal and Professor Yasmeen Haque would meet them. They surrounded the professor when he arrived at the campus around 4 am on Wednesday. He listened to the students on hunger strike.

“They are all my students. I don’t need any security,” he said when the police stepped ahead to ensure his security. The professor was with the students till 6 am.

“I was requested to write something for a memoir on the 100th birth anniversary of Bangabandhu. For that, I received a Tk 10,000 honorarium from the Prime Minister’s Office. I brought the honorarium with me. I am donating it to the movement’s fund. You keep the money. The police can arrest me now if they want to,” the professor said this during the conversation with the students on hunger strike.

He also expressed his resentment at the authority’s decision to suspend medical assistance for the agitating students, calling the decision inhumane.
