April 24 marks the eighth year of Rana Plaza tragedy. On this day in 2013, the building collapsed in Savar on the outskirts of capital Dhaka, leaving at least 1,138 people dead and 2,500 others injured in the deadliest garment-factory accident in history.

Following the Rana Plaza tragedy, many steps were taken for the safety of workers. However, there is still a long way to go and many things are to be ensured for the betterment of the RMG workers.

The global pandemic has also highlighted the extreme difficulties that garment workers face, with billions of dollars worth of cancelled orders from brands leaving millions out of work or on reduced wages. A study finds that around 57 percent of the survivors of the Rana Plaza building collapse have remained unemployed during the pandemic.

The Rana Plaza incident shocked renowned Bangladeshi poet, lyricist and composer Mahbubul Khalid. The humanist writer has penned a heart-touching song on the tragedy. The song, titled Dhongso Holo Rana Plaza, portrays the tragic incident and mourns the victims of the deadliest industrial structural accident.

The music of the song has been composed by country’s noted musician late Ahmed Imtiaz Bulbul. Three young and talented singers Mehedi Hasan, Luipa and Saran rendered their voices to the song.
