The World No Tobacco Day (WNTD) is being observed today around the world. The day is observed every year on 31 May to create awareness about the effects of tobacco use and how we can attain a tobacco-free future.

The Member States of the WHO created World No Tobacco Day in 1987 to draw global attention to the tobacco epidemic and the preventable death and disease it causes. In 1987, the World Health Assembly passed Resolution WHA40.38, calling for April 7, 1988, to be "a world no-smoking day." In 1988, Resolution WHA42.19 was passed, calling for the celebration of World No Tobacco Day, every year on May 31.

The program takes to raise concerns about the risks of cigarettes and their negative impacts on health, as well as the exploitation of the nicotine industry, which targets young people. It also helps to reduce the number of illnesses and deaths caused by tobacco use.

According to reports, almost six million people die in each year due to tobacco-related diseases. This number is anticipated to increase to more than eight million by 2030.

This year, the World No Tobacco Day theme is “Commit to Quit.” The COVID-19 pandemic has led to millions of tobacco users saying they want to quit. Nearly 60% of tobacco users around the world want to quit smoking. However, only 30% of the global population have access to quality tobacco cessation services and only 23 countries currently provide comprehensive cessation service to help tobacco users to quit.

Awareness is must to stay away from tobacco. And thus noted Bangladeshi poet, lyricist and composer Mahbubul Khalid has penned a song to raise awareness about the dangers of using tobacco. Late composer Ahmed Imtiaz Bulbul tuned the song titled ‘Barjan Koro Dhumpan' (Stop Smoking). Two young singers Rafsan and Saran rendered their voices to the song.

The song has been published on Mahbubul Khalid’s musical website ‘khalidsangeet.com’. Beside, a music video is available on the lyricist YouTube channel 'Khalid Sangeet'.

The song highlights that there is no benefit of smoking. Smoking kills and no one habituated to it will get escaped. Tobacco is full of nicotine. So taking tobacco causes serious diseases. Smoking leads to other drugs. So all should be away of smoking and other tobacco use.

Mentionable, poet, lyricist and composer Mahbubul Khalid has penned and tuned a vast number of songs including various days or observance, popular and renowned personalities, social awareness etc. His recent song on Covid-19 pandemic titled ' Corona Ke Voy Koro Na' has been widely appreciated and created awareness on the deadly virus.
