Myanmar junta sentences 19 protesters to death

Military junta in Myanmar sentenced 19 protesters to death for killing as an army official who was killed in a clash with protesters.

The military owned Myawaddy TV station said on Friday (April 09).

It was the first such sentences announced in public since a February 1 coup and crackdown on protesters.

The unwanted clash took place on March 27 in the North Okkalapa district of Yangon, Myanmar’s biggest city. Martial law had been declared in the district, allowing courts martial to pronounce sentences.

Meanwhile, security forces killed 60 people in the town of Bago, 91 kilometers northeast of Yangon, Qatar-based Al-Jazeera claimed.

However, some local media outlets immediately reported the death toll as 20. But the number of casualties could not be verified from any neutral source immediately.
