Third wave of coronavirus ‘inevitable’ in India

The third wave of coronavirus infection in India is ‘inevitable’. 

The country’s top scientific advisor made the warning on Wednesday (May 5).

K Vijay Raghavan, Principal Scientific Advisor to the Indian government said, “A phase three is inevitable given the higher levels of circulating virus but it is not clear on what time scale this phase three will occur. We should prepare for new waves.”

He said, “Updated vaccines are needed to prevent the new variant that causes rapid infections.”

Asked if a nationwide lockdown was the only solution to prevent widespread infections, VK Paul, head of the National Immunization Expert Committee, said, “If anything is needed, those issues are discussed. States have already been instructed to impose restrictions to curb the infection cycle.”
