19 dead after 4-storey Mumbai building collapses

At least 19 people died after a four-storey building collapsed in Mumbai's Kurla at around 11.30 pm on Monday night. Six others were injured.
Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) said that several have been rescued from the debris and taken to hospitals in the area.
Shiv Sena leader Aaditya Thackeray reached the spot at night and took stock of the rescue operation underway, which is being undertaken by the fire department and the National Disaster Response Fund team.
Maharashtra Minister Subhash Desai has said that the family of the dead will be given ₹ 5 lakh each while the injured will get free treatment.
BMC Additional Commissioner Ashwini Bhide said that the collapsed building was dilapidated, and since 2013 notices were first given for repair and then to demolish the building.
The building residents had even given an undertaking that they would stay there at their risk and cost, she said.
