Makeshift markets in city thrive on sacrificial meat

Makeshift markets were set up in various areas of the capital including Malibagh, Madhubag and Mogbazar.

There was an uncommon scene at Malibagh under the flyover on Eid day, where people were trading meat from sacrificed cattle.

It was seen there on Saturday noon that sellers have spread mats and distributed meat of sacrificial animal in different portion. Every portion (nearly 2kg) is being sold at Tk 300.

One of the sellers Mushtaq told Risingbd, ‘I am selling whatever I got. So far, I have sold meat for around Tk 1,000.’

Meanwhile, a large crowd of buyers was seen on footpath of Madhubag area adjacent to Hatirjheel. Beef and bones collected from different places were being sold there.

Meat seller Raihan said, ‘I bought meat at Tk 200 to Tk 300 per kg. Now, I’m selling at Tk 500 per kg.’

A resident of Mogbazar said, ‘Every year meat is bought from this market. Because I can't afford to sacrifice animal.’

It was learnt that not just in these three places. Old Dhaka, Tejgaon, Farmgate, Mirpur-1, Shahjahanpur and many other areas have makeshift markets for sacrificial animal meat.
