Netherlands for ensuring justice for atrocities against Rohingyas

The Netherlands is committed to ensuring that the Myanmar government’s atrocities against the Rohingya people are brought to justice through the International Court of Justice.

Foreign Affairs Minister of Netherlands Stef Blok wrote this in a letter to Bangladesh’s foreign minister A K Abdul Momen.

The disclosure was revealed in a press statement of the Foreign Affairs Ministry on Monday (October 19).

Netherlands Ambassador Harry Verweij handed over the letter when he made a call on Foreign Minister A K Abdul Momen at the state guest house in Dhaka on Sunday (October 18).

During the meeting, the Dutch ambassador noted that a joint statement issued by the Netherlands and Canada on September 2, 2020, pledged full cooperation in support of the Gambia case filed against Myanmar in the International Court of Justice.

The Netherlands and Canada will file a separate joint petition in that court. The Gambia last year accused Myanmar of violating the 1948 convention to try and prevent genocide in Myanmar.

The ambassador noted that the Netherlands would continue its humanitarian assistance to the displaced Rohingyas who have taken shelter in Bangladesh.

He also highlighted the Dutch government’s commitment to a slustainable solution to the Rohingya crisis. Harry Verweij emphasizes justice and accountability in order to find a sustainable solution to this problem.
