Marriage inside jail: That rape accused gets HC bail

The High Court has granted one-year bail to Zahirul Islam Zia in a rape case filed against him under Women and Children Repression Prevention Act with Sonagazi Police Station in Feni.

The HC bench led by Justice M Enayetur Rahim passed the order on Monday (November 30).

Faruk Alamgir Chowdhury, a lawyer for the accused, confirmed the matter.

Earlier, accused Zia in the rape case filed a bail petition with the HC for release after marrying the victim being inside the jail. The accused married the victim inside jail in Feni on November 19.

Zahirul Islam Zia, the accused, son of a local union parishad member, raped the woman of Chardarbesh area in Feni's Sonagazi on May 27, according to the case statement. The victim filed a rape case against Zia on the same day. Following the case, police arrested Zia on May 29 last.

Zia filed the bail petition with the HC after he failed to secure bail from trial court. Later on November 1, the HC bench of Justice M Enayetur Rahim and Justice Md Mostafizur Rahman issued a condition that Zia would be granted bail if he married the victim as they had a relationship previously.

Following the HC order, the marriage ceremony took place in presence of family members from both sides under the supervision of Feni Jail authorities.
