7 to die for killing Awami League leader Atik

Seven people have been awarded with death penalty for killing valiant freedom fighter and Keraniganj Awami League leader Atik Ullah Chowdhury. A person has been acquitted in the case.

Judge Abu Jafar Md Kamruzzaman of Dhaka Speedy Trial Tribunal-1 handed down the verdict on Wednesday noon.

The convicts are Gulzar Hossain, Ashik, Shihab Ahmed alias Shibu, Ahsanul Kabir Emon, Tajul Islam Tanu, Jahangir Khan alias Jahangir and Rafikul Islam alias Amin.  Shampa has been acquitted in the case.

Of them, only Shampa, Jahangir and Rafikul Islam are behind bars.

According to case details, Atik, a leader of local Awami League unit and former chairman of Konda union under Keraniganj upazila, went missing on December 10, 2013.

His partially burnt body was recovered from beside a hospital in Doleswar area in Keraniganj, the next day.

Killers after murdering Atik had set his body on fire to hide his identity. But from the documents and Bank ATM card found just beside the body, he was identified by his family.

His son Saidur Rahman Faruk Chowdhury filed the murder case at South Keraniganj police station and police later filed charge sheet against eight people.
