Bangladeshi sailors held captive in Yemen being brought back

Five Bangladeshi sailors held captive by Houthis in Sanaa, Yemen for nine months, have been released. The process of bringing them back to the country is underway with the intervention of State Minister for Foreign Affairs Mohammad Shahriar Alam.

State Minister Shahriar Alam on Wednesday (December 2) said, “After being held captive for nine months, they were allowed to use their mobile phones after receiving a partial ransom from the ship’s owner. One of them first contacted the state minister about two months ago.”

They are expected to arrive in Aden on Thursday (December 3) thanks to the efforts of the Oman and Kuwait embassies of Bangladesh and the Indian embassy in Djibouti over the past two months. From there, they will reach Bangladesh via India with the help of the International Organisation for Migration (IOM).

They were working for an Oman’s ship company in Yemen. Along with them, Indian nationals were also held captive by the Houthis.
