Nothing can be wasted after purchasing: Planning Minister

Planning Minister MA Mannan has expressed his outrage over the procurement of goods by the Bangladesh Bureau of Statistics (BBS).

He said, “The current secretary of the statistics and information management department is new here, I am also new. As the secretary is new, I’m mentioning that some shopping has been done in BBS for the last three years. Those things are stored. I am requesting the Secretary and DG to use these goods.”

The Minister was addressing as the chief guest at the inaugural function of Zonal Operations (I) training programme at the auditorium of Bangladesh Statistics (BBS) building at Agargaon in the capital on Monday (January 18).

The main census will be held from October 25 to 31. People across the country will be brought under the census during this one week.

MA Mannan said, now it is 2021 but the goods were bought in 2019. The purchase was made immediately after the project was passed. It is important to buy something under the project at the right time so that it is not wasted in any way. Nothing should be bought before or after. Things should be bought and use on time.”

The planning minister said, “We lagged behind for 10 months in the census due to coronavirus outbreak. This work has since been approved by the head of government. One of the hallmarks of our existence is the census. If the work is not done properly, questions will arise in everyone’s mind about this department. Therefore, everyone has to work at the right time to make proper development. The census cannot be conducted by collecting real and accurate information. Especially those who will work at the field level need to be very careful.”
