Election Commissioner (EC) Kabita Khanam has said that the by-polls in the parliamentary constituency (Lakshimipur-2) of Kazi Shahid Islam Papul is likely to be held before Ramadan.

She said this while talking to reporters at her own office at Nirbachan Bhaban in the capital’s Agargaon on Tuesday (February 23).

Kabita Khanam said, “We have received a letter, scrapping the parliament membership of Papul. The commission will hold a meeting in this regard. Elections must be held within 90 days after a parliamentary seat is declared vacant.”

There is coming Ramadan and Eid, is it possible to hold the election before that? In reply, she said, “We must consider Ramadan. No election is usually given during Ramadan. It probably will not be given either. If the election is held after Eid, it is a matter of calculating whether 90 days have passed or not. In that case, there may be a possibility of holding the polls before Ramadan. However, the final decision will be taken by the Election Commission.”

The gazette was issued on Monday (February 22) declaring Kazi Shahid Islam Papul’s seat vacant since January 28, the day the verdict was announced by the Kuwait court.
