US urged to legalise undocumented Bangladeshis

Foreign Minister AK Abdul Momen has called upon the United States to make efforts to legalise undocumented Bangladeshi Diaspora in the US through taking up the matter with the new US Government.

He made the call while speaking at a meeting with US Congresswoman Grace Meng (Democrat, New York) on Wednesday (February 24).

During the meeting, they discussed ways and means of further improving political and economic ties between Bangladesh and the US.

This was confirmed in a press release issued by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs on Thursday (February 25).

Congresswoman Grace Meng represents a large number of Bangladeshi Diaspora voters in New York, and always have been an active member of Bangladesh caucus in US Congress.

Referring to the celebration of birth centenary of the Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman and the Golden Jubilee of the Independence of Bangladesh, Bangladesh Foreign Minister invited Congresswoman Meng to visit Bangladesh with a group of US lawmakers.

During her visit to Bangladesh, he also urged her to see for herself the remarkable socio-economic progress achieved under the visionary leadership of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, and also the situation of the displaced Rohingyas.

Lauding Biden Administration’s liberal approach to immigration, he called upon Congresswoman Meng to make efforts to legalise undocumented Bangladeshi Diaspora in the US through taking up the matter with the new US Government.

Momen briefed the US lawmaker on Bangladesh’s success in tackling the COVID-19 challenge as well as on the conducive environment existing for foreign investment in the country.

Foreign Minister Momen is now on an official trip to Washington DC to reach out the new Administration to further enhance the bilateral relations and to convey Bangladesh’s enthusiasm to work closely with the new US Administration.
