Chaitra Sankranti today

The country is taking preparations to say goodbye to the running Bangla year 1427 amid the Chaitra Sankranti celebration today (Tuesday) and will welcome the Bangla new calendar year 1428 tomorrow (Wednesday) through Pahela Baishakh celebration.

Chaitra Sankranti is an age-old festival of rural Bangla which marks the last day of a Bangla year. The Bangla calendar is solar, with the year beginning on Pahela Baishakh. People from all walks of life celebrate the Baishakhi festival with great enthusiasm.   

Chaitra Sankranti is celebrated in the month of Chaitra. Sun will enter Pisces sign during Chaitra Sankranti. Chaitra  Sankranti begins today, Trayodashi Tithi. The auspicious period will begin after sunset.

It is considered auspicious to do charity, donation, holy bath etc on this day. Sacred time is considered appropriate for taking bath in holy rivers or pilgrimage sites. The festival of Surya Sakranti is a joyous and auspicious occasion that provides strength to mind, body and soul. In Bangladesh, it is celebrated with great enthusiasm among Hindu communities.

Significance of Chaitra Sankranti

In this month the motion of Sun heads towards Summers. During Summers, the Sun rises in the North and the duration of day increases. The auspicious mornings commences with early morning baths and Sun worship. It is believed that following these rituals purifies the soul and helps attain salvation. On the other hand, the one who does it is blessed with sacred benefits.

On the day of Chaitra Sankranti, the devotees must chant Gayantri Mantra with full devotion and faith since it is dedicated to Sun. Chanting Gayatri Mantra blesses the person with intelligence and wisdom. People perform religious ceremonies and do charity as per their potency. Elder people in the house donate food, clothes, money etc on this day. Special food and sweets are prepared at homes to celebrate this occasion.
