There is a provision to deduct money from the pension if government employees are convicted of corruption after retirement. However, the Ministry of Public Administration raised a proposal to remove the provision. But the cabinet upheld it rejecting the proposal.

The Ministry of Public Administration raised the proposal at a virtual cabinet meeting chaired by Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina on Monday (July 26) to amend the government employment law.

After the meeting, Cabinet Secretary Khandker Anwarul Islam told this to the reporters at the Secretariat.

He said, “Several sections of the Public Service Act, 2018 were proposed to be amended. Section 51 (4) of the Act states: If a retiree has been convicted of a serious offence or convicted of a serious misconduct, the Government or the employing authority, having given a reasonable opportunity to show cause, has completely or partially canceled, suspended or revoked his retirement benefits. This section was proposed to be repealed. The cabinet did not agree to that. The cabinet has upheld the previous one.”

He further said, “Government employees who are on Post Retirement Leave (PRL) are not allowed to go abroad or join jobs elsewhere. The Ministry of Public Administration proposed to amend this section and add a provision to get the permission of the government. The cabinet also did not approve it.”

However, there were some clerical errors in the previous law which were resolved in the amended law.
