‘Everyone concerned should take responsibility for e-commerce fraud’

Finance Minister AHM Mustafa Kamal said, “Everyone concerned should take responsibility for the fraud of e-commerce companies. These institutions have launched the activities with the permission of some authorities. The Ministry of Commerce has given them clearance. Initially, they have to take responsibility. Everyone else involved should take responsibility.”

The Minister said this after a virtual meeting of the Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs and Government Procurement on Wednesday (September 22) noon. The meeting was chaired by Finance Minister AHM Mustafa Kamal.

Asked if there would be any initiative from the Commerce Ministry as well as the Finance Ministry on e-commerce fraud, he said, “I will not tell the Commerce Ministry. Basically the job is now under the finance ministry. Bangladesh Bank (BB) has a role to play here. They bring these things to us here. There are IT issues, there is the ICT ministry. They will also take responsibility. These institutions often deceive people. That's what's going on.”

He further said, “It was nothing new. It used to be done earlier through another way. Now it has come in a different form. Earlier, it used to be done manually, now it is done electrically. Now it is being done in a digitalized way. People believe now, how much will control? The government will take responsibility. The government must take responsibility. Why would the government avoid responsibility?”
