‘Govt is looking for 240 South Africa returnees’

Foreign Minister Dr AK Abdul Momen said the government is trying to identify the 240 expatriates who came to the country last month from South Africa since a new variant of coronavirus named Omicron was detected in that African country.

The foreign minister said this while replying to a question at a media briefing held on Wednesday (December 1) on the World Peace Conference scheduled to be held in Dhaka from December 4-5.

Momen urged Bangladeshi expatriates in Africa to avoid unnecessary travel to their home country.

“In case of any emergency, they can come to Bangladesh. But we suggest them to defer their travel by a few days If there’s no emergency,” he said.

He said the government is giving top priority on preventing the new variant of coronavirus.
