Suspended Dewanganj mayor held over humiliating educational official

Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) detained Shah Newaz Shahanshah -- suspended mayor of Jamalpur’s Dewanganj municipality -- from Hotel D Meridian in Dhaka’s Uttara over humiliating an educational official physically.

He was detained on Thursday (December 23) morning.

ANM Imran Khan, assistant director of RAB’s Legal and Media wing, confirmed the development.

Earlier on December 16, Shah Newaz along with his employees went to the local Shaheed Minar to place wreaths when the education official was announcing names of different organizations according to the list.

But, the mayor became angry when the name of the municipality came at number five, and locked in an altercation with the officer.

At one stage, the mayor threw bad languages targeting the educational official and slapped him in presence of a huge crowed.

Following the incident, educational officer Md Meherullah submitted a written complaint to upazila nirbahi officer (UNO) and Dewanganj Police Station.

On December 21, Local Government Division suspended Shah Newaz from his mayoral post. District unit Awami League also expelled him from the party.
