A seven-member working committee has been formed to re-fix the launch fare, following a hike in fuel oil prices. The committee will place a proposal within two days.
The decision was taken at a meeting held between the owners of launches and senior officials of shipping ministry on Monday noon. Shipping Ministry Secretary Mostafa Kamal presided over the meeting.
Earlier, launch owners proposed to double the launch fare, following a hike in fuel oil prices. Launch owners want to raise fares by 100 per cent following a hike in fuel oil prices.
President of Bangladesh Inland Waterways (passenger carriers) Association (BIWA) Mahbub Uddin Ahmed on Sunday placed the re-fixed fares to the chairman of Bangladesh Inland Water Transport Authority (BIWTA).
They have proposed to charge Tk 4.60 in place of Tk 2.30 per kilometre (km) for the first 100km and Tk 4 instead of current fare Tk 2 per km after the first 100km.
According to the proposal, the launch fare will be increased to Tk 460 from Tk 230 per 100km.
