2 crore people suffering from kidney diseases

Kidney foundation founder professor Dr Harun-Ur-Rashid said about 85 crore of people worldwide suffer from kidney disease. The number of kidney patients in Bangladesh is about two crore.

Dr Harun-Ur-Rashid said this while addressing a two-day-long annual scientific conference in the capital on Saturday (November 26).

He said, out of the 2 crore kidney patients in Bangladesh, 40,000 suffer from kidney failure every year. 75 percent of them die due to lack of dialysis or kidney transplant treatment. In addition, around 20,000 patients die each year from sudden kidney failure.

To keep kidney patients alive, dialysis should be arranged at the district level and kidney transplantation system should be set up in each medical college hospital, he added.

Kidney and transplant experts from home and abroad are participating in the 18th annual scientific conference. Vice-Chancellor of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University (BSMMU) Prof Dr Md Sharfuddin Ahmed, Royal London Hospital’s Professor Dr. Muhammad Magdi Yaqoob, BSMMU pro VC professor AKM Mosharrad Hossain and others joined the conference.
