Members of Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) have detained Rajshahi’s Katakhali municipality mayor Abbas Ali allegedly for making derogatory remarks on Bangabandhu and announcing to stop the construction of a mural of Father of the Nation.

The elite force detained him from Hotel Razmoni Isha Kha in the capital’s Kakrail early Wednesday.

ANM Imran Khan, Senior Assistant Director, Legal and Media Wing, RAB Headquarters, confirmed the matter this morning.

Earlier, three cases were filed against Katakhali municipality Mayor Abbas Ali, also convener of the municipality unit of the Awami League, allegedly for making derogatory remarks on Bangabandhu and announcing to stop the construction of a mural of Father of the Nation.

Mayor Abbas Ali, in his second term as mayor, landed in hot water after an audio clip of his remarks on Bangabandhu went viral on social media.

He is allegedly heard to be saying that erecting a mural of Bangabandhu is a cardinal sin according to Islamic law, before issuing directives to stop its construction.
