BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir said independence, Bangladesh attained Independence through the sacrifice of millions of martyrs. The constitution of Bangladesh is a matter of our pride. The incumbent government is constantly insulting our achievements, our sense of freedom of pride and arrogance and the sanctity of the constitution.

The BNP leader made the remarks in a virtual press conference over ‘Digital Security Act’ on Friday (August 14).

Mirza Fakhrul said, ‘According to Adhikar, a human rights organization, 153 people were harassed through filing cases under Digital Security Act in 6 months—January to June-- in 2020. The common allegation in all the cases was the crime of so-called defamation or tarnishing the image of the state for expressing one’s opinion through social media. Analysing these allegations, you would see that cases were filed for speaking out against the looters of the ruling party, expressing political views and criticising the government. Today, the entire nation is choked. Freedom of conscience is chained, which is tantamount to violating the constitution.

Mentioning that at least 12 journalists were arrested under the Digital Security Act from early of 2020 to June of the year, he said, ‘Editors’ council have already expressed concern that journalists are not able to write independently because of Digital Security Act. Local and international human rights organisations have called for revoking the law.’

He said, ‘BNP voiced up from the beginning that this law is a ‘black law’ and anti-constitution. The act is a tool of the government to choke voices of people. The government has made this law to stuck in power.’
