138 AL aspirants want nominations to vie in 5 by-elections

A total of 138 aspirants from the ruling Awami League (AL) want nomination to contest the five by-polls. Of them, 78 are in Dhaka’s two seats alone.

Sunday was the last day of collecting and submitting nomination forms for Naogaon-6, Sirajganj-1, Pabna-4, Dhaka-5 and Dhaka-18 by-elections under the banner of Awami League.

The Dhaka-18 fell vacant after death of MP Sahara Khatun. A total of 55 aspirants have collected forms to secure party nomination in the constituency. Former Home Minister, also Awami League presidium member Advocate Sahara Khatun, has been elected Member of Parliament (MP) for the Dhaka-18 constituency for last 12 years.

Jubo Women’s League president Nazma Akter, Former Dhaka Metropolitan Awami League joint general secretary Quader Khan, Airport Thana Awami League President Md Shahjahan Ali Mondal, Sahara Kahtun’s niece Anisur Rahman among 55 want nomination for the constituency.

Dhaka-5 constituency became vacant after its MP Habibur Rahman Mollah passed away. A total of 19 aspirants including former Jagannath University unit BCL president, also current Dhaka Metropolitan (South) Swechchhasebak League president Kamrul Hassan Ripon, Demra Thana Awami League president Moshiur Rahman Mollah Sajal, Jatrabari Thana Awami League president Kazi Monirul Islam and general secretary Harunor Rashid Munna seek nomination.

The election commission (EC) announced Sirajganj-1 constituency vacant after death of senior AL leader Mohammad Nasim. Three collected and submitted nominations for the constituency.

Pabna-4 seat fell vacant after its MP Shamsur Rahman Sharif Dilu died. A total of 28 aspirants want nomination from Awami League for the constituency.

Naogaon-6 fell vacant after MP Israfil Alam passed away. A total of 33 aspirants collected nomination forms.
