Awami League (AL) general secretary Obaidul Quader has said BNP is sheltering the rapists by talking about fall of the government through speaking in different languages and launching a movement in name of rapists’ trial, instead of creating public awareness.

The Road Transport and Bridges Minister said this in a press briefing from his official residence in the capital on Friday (October 09) afternoon.

Quader said a question aroused in people’s minds today is whether BNP is trying to save the rapists and criminals by announcing the fall of the government while seeking justice for rape.

He said BNP leaders have always complained that the government is harboring criminals. The government has become a terror to criminals and irregularities. In the meantime, the government is taking action immediately after any crime is organized and brings the accused under the law. The government launched a crackdown on criminals even before BNP protested on the ground. Take disciplinary action against the perpetrators.

We have repeatedly said that party identity cannot exempt criminals from punishment. The government has taken steps to amend the law not to provide shelter to the criminals, but to tighten the punishment. A proposal to amend the law is coming up in the next cabinet on the instructions of the Prime Minister with the provision of maximum punishment, he added.
