Bangavax, a COVID-19 vaccine candidate developed by Bangladeshi pharmaceutical company Globe Biotech Limited, is 100 percent effective against 11 variants of coronavirus including the highly contagious Delta variant.
The local pharmaceutical company claimed this on Monday (October 18).
Globe Biotech senior manager (quality and regulatory operations) Dr Mohammad Mohiuddin on Monday said, “The ongoing pre-clinical trials of Bangavax started on August 1 this year will end on next Thursday. We will then be able to hand over the detailed report of the trial to the Bangladesh Medical Research Council (BMRC) within the next one week.”
He said, “Some11 variants of coronavirus including the Delta have been active in various parts of the world so far. We have done a sequence analysis of 11 variants. Later we matched the sequence of the vaccine. Bangavax has been effective for each variant. Large evidence has also been found in the case of tests on the body of monkeys. Preliminary results have shown that Bangavax is able to produce safe and effective antibodies in the body of monkeys.”
He added, “When the first vaccine was made a year ago, not so many variants of coronavirus were discovered. As a result, most of the current vaccines are not able to play a very effective role against the Delta variant which Bangavax can do.”
Mohammad Mohiuddin, “We believe Bangavax will work great in the human body. So if we can bring this vaccine to market after testing on human, we can get rid of the ongoing epidemic of other variants of coronavirus including delta around the world.”
He said, “The special feature of our vaccine is that single dose has been found to have effective antibodies in animal trials. Hopefully, similar results will be found in clinical trials. It can be stored for 1 month at + 4 ° C and up to 6 months at -20 ° C. Because this vaccine is synthetically made, it is virus free and 100% halal. If we can end the clinical trial of the vaccine quickly and dedicate Bangavax to the service of people, then Bangladesh’s position will be more well-established across the world.”
