No e-commerce without registration: Cabinet Secretary

Cabinet Division Secretary Khandker Anwarul Islam has said that works for registration and monitoring are going on so that nobody can run any e-commerce platform without the registration.

He said this while replying to a query after a meeting at the Secretariat on Monday (October 19).

Earlier, the regular cabinet meeting chaired by Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, joining remotely from her official residence Gonobhabon as her cabinet colleagues were present at the secretariat.

The Cabinet Secretary said, “There has been a lot of discussion in the meeting over e-commerce. Recently, a five-member committee has been formed by the Cabinet under the chairmanship of the Home Minister in this connection. They have taken time and will give a report within a short period. Today, the commerce minister and secretary said they have come a long way. We have discussed the issue in detail with Bangladesh Bank and NTMC.”

He said, “The cabinet took a decision that those involved in this kind of business trade should be monitored through registration. The cabinet discussed how to do that. At the same time, people need to be made aware of what kind of proposals they are responding to. A motorbike worth Tk 5 lakh will be given for 2.5 lakh and they will go there in flock. They should make their own judgment on how they will give a thing worth Tk 5 lakh for 2.5 lakh. People also need to be made aware. So a mechanism is being worked out to supervise the payment gateways so that no one can operate without the registered payment gateways.”
