US wants free, fair general election

United States Ambassador to Bangladesh Peter Haas talks to the reporters

The United States (US) has no headache over which party will win the election, but the country wants a free and fair general election in future in Bangladesh.

United States Ambassador to Bangladesh Peter Haas told this to the reporters after he made a courtesy call on Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Kazi Habibul Awal at the Election Commission in the capital’s Agargaon on Wednesday (June 8) noon.

He said, “The Election Commission (EC) is very important in all the election and election process. Not only EC, but also the government, political parties, media and the people have a great role to hold a free and fair election.”

When asked whether US had any suggestion to arrange the election, Peter Haas replied, “Of course not, the US has no role over the matter. This goes to the Election Commission and all Bangladeshis. It’s not our business.”

In reply to another question, the US Ambassador said, “I came here three months ago. I’ve made courtesy calls to two or three places earlier. As part of that, I met CEC and other ECs. I’m trying to learn what is happening in Bangladesh and how US can be partner here."
