Spice market heats up ahead of Eid-ul-Azha

The prices of spices are increasing at an unusual rate ahead of Eid-ul-Azha. Onion prices have been increased again in the wholesale and retail markets within a week.

Visiting the country's largest wholesale market Kawanbazar on Friday, it was found that the price of onions has increased by Tk8-10 per kg compared to last week and is being traded at Tk36-40 per kg.

Kiron Mia, a wholesale trader said, the reason behind the price hike is Eid. However, the prices have gone up due to the loss of onions in floods.

Md Mizanur Rahman, a retailer said, last week I had sold onions at Tk40-45 per kg. But today we are selling it at Tk50-55. However, the price of onion is not likely to come down before Eid.

Besides ginger, the prices of other spices also went up. The price of garlic has increased by Tk20 per kg.

On Friday, the market sold Tk 120-160 per kg of garlic, while gingers were seen selling at Tk150-200 per kg.

Apart from ginger-garlic-onion, the price of dry chili has risen the most in the last few days among the dried spice products. The price of dry chili has gone up by as much as Tk30-60 per kg in one week.
