Haji Selim gets bail in graft case

The Appellate Division has granted bail to ruling Awami League leader Haji Mohammad Salim in a corruption case filed by Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC).

The higher court has also given permission to file an appeal petition with the court.

A five-member bench headed by Chief Justice Hasan Foez Siddique passed the order on Tuesday.

Haji Selim’s lawyer Advocate M Said Ahmed Raja confirmed the news.

In 2007, the ACC filed the case against Selim. On April 27, 2008, a Dhaka court jailed him for 13 years and fined Tk 20 lakh.

Selim moved the High Court against the verdict.  The High Court reduced the fine imposed on Selim by half to Tk 10 lakh.

On January 12, 2015, the Appellate Division, responding to an ACC appeal, cancelled a judgement of the High Court that on November 1, 2011 scrapped a special court verdict sentencing him to 13 years in jail for acquiring wealth through illegal channels.
