Cummins named Australia Test captain

Pat Cummins is Australia’s 47th men’s Test captain and Steve Smith has been picked as his deputy in a return to the leadership team for the first time since the infamous sandpaper scandal.

Cummins, 28, will lead Australia out against England at The Gabba on December 8, replacing Tim Paine.

Friday’s decision comes a week after Paine sensationally resigned following a texting scandal which had lingered in the background for years but not come out in public.

The board met and made its decision at a meeting on Thursday night before officially naming Cummins and Smith as leaders.

Cummins declared his reign could ‘look different’ to previous captaincies, promising a ‘real collaborative’ approach with his deputy.
“There’s going to be times when I’m out in the middle, it’s a hot day and I’m in the middle of a spell and I need to turn to people for advice, for tactics, for experience. That’s one of the big reasons why I wanted Steve to be vice captain.

“How that looks, it could potentially look different to how you’ve seen partnerships work in the past.
