Sri Lanka post 258/4 on opening day

Angelo Mathews scored his maiden Test hundred against Bangladesh as Sri Lanka finished the opening day of the first Test against on 258-4 at the Zahur Ahmed Chowdhury Stadium in Chattogram on Sunday (May 15).

Mathews, who also smashed his 12th Test ton in career, remained unbeaten on 114 off 213 balls where Dinesh Chandimal remained not out on 34.

After losing two quick wickets after the tea break, Mathews and Chandimal’s unbeaten 75 runs partnership ensured Sri Lanka to finish the day on a high note against the Tigers.

Sri Lanka started the post-tea session on 158-2 but they lost the wicket of well set Kusal Mendis in the very first ball of the session as Taijul Islam dismissed him for 54.

Later, Bangladesh’s talisman Shakib Al Hasan dismissed Dhananjaya de Silva for four, which put Sri Lanka in some pressure.

Sri Lanka had a brilliant start after winning the toss before both openers were dismissed by the local boy, Nayeem Hassan in the first session of the match.

Nayeem, finished the day with 2-71 while Taijul and Shakib bagged one wicket each.

Both the teams wore black arm-band during the first day’s play and also observed a minute silence before the start of the match in the memory of late Australian Cricketer Andrew Symonds who died in a car crash on Sunday.
