Walton Central Zone had become champions of the ninth Bangladesh Cricket League (BCL), the country’s only franchise-based first-class cricket tournament, for both shorter and longer version this year.
The team financed by Walton Group also clinched the titles in the first and fourth edition of the tournament.
Walton as a first team gained unparalleled achievement of wining two titles in same season. To celebrate the victory of ninth BCL tournament title, Walton Central Zone arranged a gala event at the Walton corporate office in the city on Sunday (June 26) evening.
Walton High-Tech Industries PLC Managing Director and CEO Golam Murshed attended the event as the chief guest.
Shakib al-Hasan and Mosaddek Hossain Saikat could not attend the event as they are currently touring West Indies.
But Shuvagata Hom, Soumya Sarkar, Mohammad Mithun, Nazmul Islam Apu and other players joined the event.
Walton Hi-Tech Industries Deputy Managing Directors Nazrul Islam Sarker, Amdadul Hoque Sarker, Eva Rezwana Nilu, Shoeb Hossain Noble and Humayun Kabir, Senior Executive Directors SM Zahid Hasan, Firoz Alam and Amin Khan, Executive Director Azizul Hakim and Deputy Executive Director and Walton Central Zone Manager Milton Ahmed, among others, were also present in the programme.
The whole event got turned into lively as it was hosted by Firoz Alam, the team’s coordinator and Walton’s senior executive director. The programme launched with recitation from the Holy Quran and national anthem. A one-minute silence was observed in memory of the late cricketer Mosharraf Hossain Rubel, a member of the Walton Central Zone family. The cricketer, who lost his battle with cancer, won the first two titles for Walton.
Team manager Milton Ahmed said in his welcome speech, “Walton Central Zone is a family. None can defeat them when a family step into a battle together. Their pomp, devotion and labor cannot go in vain. Our cricketers do not consider Walton as a team, it is an integral part of their family. That’s why we had the final smile of winning the title.”
The chief guest Golam Murshed said, “Walton is your home and brand as well. This evening is for you. We are organizers only. We are grateful for all the hard work you did for Walton brand. Its door is always open for you. We want to stay with Walton Central Zone and keep fighting to become champions.”
He further said, “Cricket is our passion which holds a big part of our national identity. I visited South Korea last month. Vice president of a company there asked me what’s our country famous for? One of his colleagues from the side came up with replies immediately, ‘They play cricket very well.’ I did not need to say anything. A country is recognizing another country just with cricket. It is a matter of pride. And it has been possible for you.”
He added, “I am a big fan of cricket and cricketers. Playing cricket is not so easy. Many people think a lot from the outside. How could it be an easy task to play a game for all day long? But (It is) not (easy) at all. That’s why you have to practice day and night. One thing, when you hold a bat, you have to carry on with it. You cannot think something else.”
He said, “Cricket is first of all. It is a passion of the nation. We are so proud of cricket. Walton is always by your side in the journey you are making to honor the country. We want to win the world carrying the red and green flag of the country with Walton brand.”
Mohammad Mithun hit the only double ton in his BCL career this year. The cricketer is very happy with his journey in the competition. He said, “Only when cricketers consider a team as a family they can sacrifice a lot. We love this team very much. That’s why many want to play with this team. We also want.”
Another cricketer Soumya Sarkar said, “(I) thank Walton authorities for giving such an evening gift. Unity is needed to become a team champion. The main reason for us to be champion was the unity. Everyone had faith from the very beginning. Ever since the way we won the first match, I had believed that this time there would be a chance to become the champion. We did that and got this title with the unity and faith of all.”
Spin all-rounder Shuvagata Hom, who led Walton in four-day version of cricket, said, “It’s a matter of great satisfaction to become champions in two formats of a tournament in same season. Each member of the team and Walton officials only wanted to win the title. We were able to reach here because of contribution of everyone from the coaching staff, the supporting staff and the team boy who were involved. Thanks to Walton Group, for being by our side, for being by cricket.”
Every member of the team was given a 40-inch Walton Android smart TV as a gift to cheer up them.
