Staff Correspondent: A court in Dhaka on Monday started trial against sole accused Obaidul Khan in Suraiya Akter Risha murder case turning down the acquittal of the accused.

Judge Abul Kashem of the eighth Additional Metropolitan Sessions Judge's Court passed the order and set May 8 as the date for hearing in the case.

The court framed charges accusing Obaidul Khan in the murder case.

Suraiya Akter Risha was a Class VIII student of Willes Little Flower School at Kakrail in the capital.

Chargesheet was submitted to the Chief Metropolitan Magistrate (CMM) court on November 14 in 2016. Ramna Police Station officer-in-charge (OC-Investigation) Ali Hossain submitted the chargesheet to the court.

26 people were made witnesses in the chargesheet.

Later on March 22 this year, Judge Kamrul Hossain Mollah of Dhaka Metropolitan Senior Special Judge's Court accepted the chargesheet.

Earlier on September 5, Obaidul gave confessional statement under Section 164 of the Criminal Procedure at the court of metropolitan magistrate Ahsan Habib.

In his confessional statement, Obaidul said, "I gave Risha a proposal of love. But she refused my proposal. So, I stabbed her."

Obaidul was brought to Dhaka after arresting him in Nilphamari by a police team led by additional deputy commissioner (ADC) HM Azimul Huque of the Ramna Division of DMP on October 31 last.

Tailor shop employee Obaidul fled away after stabbing Risha in her belly and hands on the footover bridge in front of her school at Kakrail on October 25 last. Risha later died at the Dhaka Medical College Hospital.

In connection with the incident, Risha's mother filed a case under Section 307 (injuring for killing) of the Bangladesh Penal Code with the city's Ramna Police Station. When Risha succumbed later, the case was turned into a murder case under Section 302 (murder) of the Bangladesh Penal Code.
