Attempt to kill Sheikh Hasina: 11 get 20 years in jail

Staff Correspondent: A Dhaka court sentenced 11 people with 20 years of imprisonment for attempting to kill present Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina in August 1989.

However, the court acquitted one of the accused as no charges were found against him.

Judge of the Additional Metropolitan Session’s Court Md Zahidul Kabir passed the verdict on Sunday.

The court also fined all of the convicts Tk 20,000 each in default of which they will serve six-month more in jail.

The convicts are- Lt Col (retd) Khandakar Abdur Rashid (fugitive), Zafar Ahmed alias Manik (fugitive), Humayun Kabir alias Humayun (fugitive), Golam Sarwar alias Mamun, Sohel alias Freedom Sohel Joj Miah, Shahjahan Balu, Nazmul Maksud alias Murad, Mizanur Rahman, Khandokar Amirul Islam alias Kajal and Gazi Imam Hossain.  

Earlier on October 16, the Judge Zahidul Kabir fixed October 29 for delivering the verdict. 

On August 10, 1989, the convicts launched an attack on Sheikh Hasina at her residence in Dhanmondi's Road 32.

Later, Zahurul Islam, a security guard of the residence, filed a case with Dhanmondi Police Station.
