14 bullet-hit in Tejgaon clash

Staff Correspondent: At least 14 people sustained bullet injuries in a triangular clash between students of Dhaka Polytechnic Institute, locals and police near the institute in the capital’s Tejgaon area on Tuesday night.
Tejgaon Industrial Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Abdur Rashid told risingbd that the students had a longstanding rivalry with a group of youths of Begunbari slum over drug sale in the area. Students and locals locked into a clash around 9.00pm. Later, police fired several rounds from shotguns to bring them under control.
However, students claimed police and locals had attacked them when the students tried to put a stop to local peddlers’ narcotics dealing. “We got hit by bullets when shots were fired during the clash.”
Students who were shot were identified as Md Rasel, Mazharul Islam Manik, SM Shahjalal, Babul, Saiful Islam, Basu Deb, Nadim, Pranto and Rony. They have been admitted to Dhaka Medical College Hospital.
