18 of a family killed in Gujarat flood

International Desk: Eighteen members of a family were found dead in flood at Khariya village in Banaskantha district under the country's Gujarat state on Wednesday, media reports.

The bodies including eight women and an eight-year-old girl were recovered from the bank of Banas river, climbing the death toll from the state-wide disaster to 119.

The toll may go up further as rescue operations are on, according to Times of India.

Khariya was among 30 villages of the state where an alert had been sounded after water level in the Banas river swelled due to influx of water from the dams following heavy downpour.

Apart from Gujarat, the northeastern states of Arunachal Pradesh, Assam have been hard-hit by monsoon flooding, while pockets of the eastern states of Odisha and Bihar have also been affected.

Meanwhile Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi surveyed the devastation across Gujarat from the skies on Tuesday, urging people across his home-state to remain resilient.
