Staff Correspondent, Chattogram: To revive the Karnaphuli river, considered Chattogram's lifeline, the district administration has continued their much-expected demolition drive for the second day on Tuesday.
Executive magistrate Tahmilur Rahman launched the drive on Monday morning.
On the first day of the eviction drive, the authorities demolished several hundreds of illegally constructed structures.
Law enforcing agencies including RAB, Police and fire service men are helping the district administration to conduct the drive.
Chattogram Deputy Commissioner Md Elias Hossain said the authorities will continue the eviction drive until it is required to save the river.
He said the government is determined to restore all the other rivers and canals across the country by demolishing illegal structures.
Stern action would be taken against encroachers on the riverbanks and against all those who will prevent the programmme, he said.
“We have a list of illegal structures. Over 2000 illegal structures have been identified on both sides of the river and those will be demolished in three phases”, he also said.
