21 August grenade attack verdict today

Staff Correspondent: The verdicts in two cases filed over the deadly grenade attacks carried out targeting an Awami League rally on August 21, 2004 will be delivered today (Wednesday).

Judge Shahed Nuruddin of Dhaka Speedy Trial Tribunal-1 set up at a building on Nazimuddin road near the old Dhaka Central Jail will announce the verdict.

Earlier on September 18, the verdict was kept awaiting after both the prosecution and the defence completed their arguments.

BNP Acting Chairman Tarique Rahman, two former ministers, including Lutfozzaman Babar and former top police and intelligence officials of the then BNP-led four-party alliance government, are among the accused in the two cases.

At least 24 people were killed and around 300 injured in the grisly attack on an Awami League rally in the capital’s Bangabandhu Avenue on August 21, 2004. Sheikh Hasina, the then opposition leader in parliament, narrowly escaped the attack with an ear injury.
