400 maunds of mangoes destroyed in capital

Staff Correspondent: A mobile court of Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) has destroyed 400 maunds of chemically tainted mangoes from fruit-selling shops in the city's Karwan Bazar wholesale market.

After tests on the mangoes from different fruit-selling shops, it has been seen that growth hormones and artificial ripening agents like ethephon (or ethylene), which is more dangerous than formalin, have been used to make the mangoes bigger and to hasten the ripening process, according to the mobile court.

Sarwar Alam, an executive magistrate at the RAB headquarters, conducted the mobile court that began at dawn on Tuesday and continued till noon.

After harvest, ethephon is used for fast ripening and to make the fruits yellow, Sarwar Alam said.
