4,24,000 unregistered Rohingyas in country

Senior Correspondent: Relief and Disaster Management Minister Mofazzal Hossain Chowdhury Maya has said that 4,24,000 Rohingyas have entered Bangladesh fleeing Myanmar to escape a military offensive.

4,24,000 Rohingyas crossed the border into Bangladesh from August 25 to September 20, the minister said this at a press conference on Thursday.

About 5,575 of the new refugees have gone through biometric screenings and all Rohingyas will come under registration within two months, the minister said.

2,000 acres of land has been allocated in Kutupalong area and 14,000 sheds have been made there.  The new refugees have been kept in 14 camps.

The UNHCR has said it wants to provide supports such as, food, shelter and healthcare. The WFP has pledged food aid for 400,000 people for four months, the press conference was told.

The public health engineering department is supplying 14,000 units of drinking water to the refugee camps every, Chowdhury said, adding that 100 tube-wells and 500 toilets have been installed.

Four mobile water-treatment plants, capable of supplying 64,000 litres every 8 hours, have been also installed, said the minister.
