50 dead, 32 lakh affected by floods in 22 dists

Staff Correspondent: Around 50 people have been killed and about 32 lakh people in 22 districts affected by the flash floods triggered by incessant rains, according to a Parliament Secretariat press release.

The parliamentary standing committee on Ministry of Water Resources disclosed this information at a meeting at the secretariat on Thursday.

The meeting discussed the overall situation of ongoing floods across the country and the last update about the implementation of projects undertaken by the ministry.

One-third of the 1900-kilometre embankment under Bangladesh Water Development Board has been collapsed, the meeting said.

The meeting suggested introducing a guideline under dredging master plan to keep the flow of water of every river running.

Water Resources Minister Anisul Islam Mahmud and State Minister for Water Resources Muhammad Nazrul Islam were, among others, present during the meeting.

President of the committee Ramesh Chandra Sen presided over the meeting.
