Secretariat Correspondent: The Cabinet on Monday approved the draft of ‘The Dowry Prohibition Act, 2018’ suggesting five years of imprisonment for making efforts to implicate one with false charges over dowry.
The approval came at the regular cabinet meeting held at Prime Minister’s Office with Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina in the chair.
Cabinet Secretary Mohammad Shafiul Alam briefed reporters after the meeting.
As per the proposed draft law, the punishment for filing any false case will be maximum five years’ imprison or maximum Tk 50,000 as fine or both, said the Cabinet Secretary.
Shafiul Alam said the cabinet simultaneously proposed slapping of an amount of Taka 50,000 for demanding or giving dowry keeping intact the existing provision of one to five years of imprisonment on the same charge.
He said one could face both the jail term and the penalty simultaneously or either of the two.
Shafiul Alam said the draft law has been prepared rearranging the original law of Dowry Prohibition Act, 1980 and its subsequent amendments made through promulgation of ordinances.
