61 sued for corruption in embankment construction

Staff Correspondent: The Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) has filed a case accusing 61 people including concerned officials and contractors of Bangladesh Water Development Board (BWDB) on the charge of corruption, irregularity and negligence to duty in constructing embankments in haor areas.
ACC Assistant Director Faruk Ahmed filed the case with Sunamganj Sadar Police Station on Sunday.
Of the accused, two people including Afsar Uddin, a sacked executive engineer of BWDB in Sunamganj, have been arrested in this connection.
Confirming the incident, Pranab Kumar Bhattacharya, public relations officer of the anti-graft body, said a process is underway to arrest other accused.
Earlier on April 30, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina visited the damaged areas in Sunamganj and said action will be taken if allegation of negligence to duty is found against any official involved in constructing embankments in haor areas.
Meanwhile, the anti-graft body has started investigation into the corruption in the construction of embankments in the haor areas. A three-member investigation team has been formed with ACC director Md Belal Hossain in the head.
