64-year-old shoots 50 to death in Las Vegas

International Desk: The gunman who opened fire on a country music festival in Las Vegas on Sunday night has been identified as 64-year-old Stephen Paddock as it emerged that more than 50 people are believed to have died.

Stephen Craig Paddock was a resident of Mesquite, Nevada, with no known terror connections.

Police have confirmed the identity of the killer, while US media is reporting he was a white male who had been living in a retirement community.

The gunman was found dead by authorities after he opened fire on the concert, killing more than 50 people and injuring over 400 others.

Despite initial reports suggesting he had been shot dead by a SWAT team, it now looks as though Paddock turned the gun on himself.

The Nevada native is believed to be a grandfather who lived with Marilou Danley in Babbling Brook Court.

Records show Paddock lived in a three-year-old, £297,554 ($396,000) two-bedroom home in the tiny desert community of Mesquite.

The incident has been confirmed as the deadliest mass shooting in US history, surpassing the Orlando shooting at the Pulse nightclub in June 2016 when 49 people were killed.

Updating reporters on the incident, Joseph Lombardo, the sheriff of the Las Vegas Metropolitan police department, said: "We are looking at in excess of 50 individuals dead and over 200 individuals injured ... Obviously this is a tragic incident and one that we have never experienced in this valley. My condolences go out to the loved ones.

"The suspect’s name is Stephen Paddock, with a date of birth of four nine of 1953. As far as history and background we haven’t completed that part of the investigation."

Earlier, Mr Lombardo said the man was believed to be a "local resident".
