7-murder: Timely interference pushes offenders to trial

Staff Correspondent: Chief Justice Surendra Kumar Sinha said, "The offenders of the sensational seven-murder in Narayanganj have been put on trial at the timely interference of the Supreme Court (SC). The faith of people of all walks of life of the country in the judiciary has increased as the trial of the case has been finished within the shortest period.”

The CJ on Tuesday made the comment in a message on the occasion of the second anniversary of his taking office as the 21st chief justice of the country.

Some influential accused officials of the Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) have conducted the sensational incident of seven-murder with the attitude of impunity which has stunned the whole nation, he added.

The chief justice expressed hope saying that though there is a little contradiction with the government about issuing a gazette notification on the lower court judges’ job disciplinary and conduct rules, it will be resolved soon.

There is an independent job rule for the officials and staff of all departments of the state, he said, adding that nature and temperament of subordinate court judges’ functions are different from others.

“If the executive has any scope for interfering in the disciplinary issues of judges, there is a possibility of an interruption in independently discharging judicial functions of judges of the subordinate courts. For the logical reason, a different discipline and appeal rules are indispensable for the judiciary and therefore its draft has been prepared,” Justice SK Sinha said.

He said the objective of separation of judiciary from the executive will be implemented if the judges are controlled by an independent conduct and discipline rule.
