Staff Correspondent: Eight teachers fell sick in two days of the indefinite hunger strike enforced by the assistant teachers of the state-run primary schools demanding upgrade of their salary scale.

They are being treated at Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH) in the capital.

The sick teachers are—Md Jahangir Alam, Ajmol Hossain, Abdul Mannan, Md Haque Mia, Md Nazrul Islam, Al Faruqui Rashed, Nasrin Aktar and Anwar Hossain. They are from different primary schools.

Assistant teachers of primary schools went on fast-unto-death from yesterday morning (Saturday) demanding their salary just next to the headmasters' scale.

Primary Assistant Teachers Federation, a combined platform of assistant teachers of 10 organizations, began the strike at Central Shaheed Minar in the capital.

Earlier, assistant teachers of primary schools threatened to go on fast-unto-death from December 23 if their jobs were not upgraded from 14th grade to 11th grade in the eighth national pay scale by December 22.

Headmasters of the primary schools are in the 10th grade in the 8th national pay scale while assistant teachers are in the 14th grade with the same educational qualification.
