8 get death penalty for Alim murder

Court Correspondent, DHAKA, Feb 25: A Dhaka court has awarded death penalty to eight people for killing ex-Dhaka City Corporation (DCC) commissioner Alim.

Judge Md Akhtaruzzaman of the Third Additional Metropolitan Sessions Judge`s Court in Dhaka delivered the verdict on Tuesday, 17 years after the murder.

The condemned convicts are Syed Ahmed, Basir Ahmed, Farid Ahmed, Harun, Siraj, Shawkat Ali, Shiblu and Kamal.

However, Shawkat Ali, Shiblu and Kamal were tried in absentia as they have been on the run since the murder.

Haji Mohammad Alim, the commissioner for Dhaka’s Lalbagh ward no-62, was killed in 1996.
